This steel handled Faschinenmesser is attributed to the Kingdom of Wurttemberg. It is the lightest and rarest of the three types of artillery hanger issued to the Saxony, Prussian and Bavarian troops in the second half of the 19th century

Ribbed steel hilt with cruciform cross guard engraved with issue number 123.R.S.10. Grenadier-Regiment Nr 123 a regiment of the Württemberg Army from 1813 to 1919. It fought in 1866 in the German War the regiment as part of the Württemberg Division. As well as 1870/1871 against France at Wörth, Champigny and before Paris

The blade and scabbard are in good condition, with some minor pitting towards the tip. The blade and guard are solid with no movement. The blade measures 47cm, and is 61cm overall. It measures 3.6cm at the guard and weighs a surprisingly heavy 728g

Issued to troops of the various German kingdoms from the early 1840’s until the adoption of the small calibre 1888 commission rifle. This model with the steel hilt was unique to the troops of the Kingdom of Wurttemberg and is the scarcest of the Faschinenmesser with all other states issuing brass handled weapons of similar design
