Robert Jackson (1750-1827) was a Scottish physician-surgeon, reformer and inspector of army hospitals. For several years he practiced medicine in Stockton-on-Tees where this book was published. First published in 1804 this enlarged second edition of his best-known book is to be preferred. In a long chapter he examines the military character of the armies of many European countries as well as those of ancient Greece and Rome. There are chapters on the selection and training of recruits, tactics, the intellectual and moral motives of military action, discipline in the field, service in tropical climates etc.
